We all know the exposure to toxins is unavoidable in this day and age, yet many of us willingly subject ourselves to them every single day without even realizing it! From the moment we were conceived until now, the cells in our bodies have been accumulating, and possibly storing, toxins.
Now, obviously, we can’t control every single toxic thing we come in contact with, like environmental pollutants and prenatal/childhood exposures, but some things are easy to change and could make a huge difference in our health and vitality! Luckily, the human body was designed to do amazing things!!!
When we’re exposed to toxins internally and externally, our bodies are designed to remove them by way of our eliminative organs (e.g. kidneys, liver, skin, lungs, and intestines.) However, if we’re taking in more toxins than our system can filter out and eliminate, they can stay in the body for months, years, and even decades in extreme cases! This usually happens when detoxing isn’t a part of our regular routine.
When our bodies get backed up with toxins it can lead to some really uncomfortable symptoms and possible diseases later on. That’s why it’s super important to be aware of what you might be putting in and on your body.

Prescription & Over the Counter Drugs
Before I explain this a little further, I just want to put on the record that I’m not a medical doctor and do not intend to diagnose or treat any disease. Prior to stopping any prescription medications, talk to your doctor. This article is for educational and informative purposes only.
That being said, there’s such a thing as drug toxicity. It’s actually incredibly common, yet highly undetected by many doctors and patients.
Overtime, our body can’t process medications as quickly as it takes them in and ends storing the excess in our tissues and organs. This can, ultimately, destroy your liver and kidney function, which is a huge risk factor for some seriously painful problems later in life.
Personally, I don’t take any over-the-counter or prescription drug (other than a daily vitamin and probiotics by Garden of Life, which I love!) But, even still, I don’t take those every single day. Only when I’ve been making some not-so-great food choices.
After learning how dangerous pharmaceutical and over the counter drugs are, it was easy to give up taking the majority of man-made drugs. I’m hardly tempted to pop an Advil when I have a headache or a bout of bad period cramps! It honestly feels so nice to not rely on a pill to give me a quick (however, temporary) fix for my problems.
I’ve realized that symptoms are there for a reason and that it does my body and healing no justice to suppress them. Just because there is no sign of symptoms, doesn’t mean disease does not exist. When we allow our bodies to fully run their natural course, true healing begins.
Bath & Beauty Products
Now, hopefully, we all have some sort of personal hygiene routine but if you, like many of us, use conventional products such as toothpaste, hand/body soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, moisturizer, make up, etc., chances are they contain some really toxic chemicals that are sitting on your skin and soaking into your body.
Overtime, continuous use and long term exposure to these toxins have the same effect on the body as drug toxicity. Many of these products contain ingredients that alter our hormones and disrupt the proper function of our organs.
Instead of trying to list and explain hundreds of dangerous chemicals that are found in most bath and beauty products, I’m going to provide a link. I recommend checking out Safe Cosmetics’ Chemicals of Concern.
It’s honestly scary how many toxic products most of us use on a daily basis. Luckily, there are alternatives that are safer, work better AND cost less in the long run! I plan to post some of my favorite natural alternatives later on this year so stay tuned!
Air Fresheners, Candles & Household Cleaners
Most of us are quick to grab the scented sprays and chemical cleaners whenever our homes get messy (as they all do), but I encourage you to think again. Many cleaning and smell-good products on the market today release what is formally called volatile organic compounds, or VOC’s. These are carcinogenic, or cancer causing, compounds that the Food and Drug Administration permits legal in consumer products.
VOC’s cause a lot of problems including, but not limited to: headaches, nausea, central nervous system and organ damage, allergic reactions, memory impairment, and hormonal imbalance. The products that are supposed to be helping us are actually hurting us. Pretty scary, huh?!
Some of the products that contain VOC’s include most scented candles and fresheners, bleach, aerosol spray products, detergent, dish washing liquid, fabric cleaners, furniture polish, oven cleaners, etc. The list could seriously go on and on and on… Luckily, the natural world has some awesome alternatives that are safe and affordable! I’ll touch on some of my faves in the future.
Food & Drinks
Now I clearly don’t mean to lead on that all food and drinks contain worrisome ingredients, because that’s definitely not the case but, unfortunately, a lot of them do. If it’s been through any kind of manufacturing process, it probably contains ingredients that are bodies are not designed to consume.
Animal products, especially processed meats and dairy, contain added synthetic growth hormones. These hormone altering chemicals are given to the animals so that they will grow larger in order to produce more meat, milk and eggs than they normally would. When we eat these products, they affect the balance of our body’s naturally-occurring hormones which has been shown to cause short and long-term health risks. This is not the case with ethically and sustainably-raised, grass-fed meat and animal products.
Additionally, most processed food and drinks (basically, anything other than raw fruits, vegetables and herbs) contain refined/complex carbs, artificial preservatives and dyes, genetically modified material and highly addictive substances such as MSG.
Our bodies recognize these ingredients as foreign materials and trigger inflammatory responses to try and kill them off. This means our immune systems must work to get rid of the toxins we’re ingesting, rather than fighting off something more serious like bacteria or pathogens.
When we eat animal products and processed foods we are more vulnerable to getting sick and end up feeling worse than we really should. Once you’ve switched to a fresher, more nutritious diet, you’ll notice that fruits and veggies will taste 1000x better than animal products and processed foods/drinks.
I have been vegan since June 2017 and can honestly say it’s made all the difference in my health and quality of life! I eat to live and feel so good about the choices I’m making when I’m giving my body what it needs to heal.
If you get your water from a public source, like most of us do, you can almost bet that it’s full of chemicals and pollutants. Although water suppliers have “standards” of quality, hazardous chemicals, hormones, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, pathogens, and SO many other toxic contaminants still make it through the tap and in to our bodies.
You might be saying “what if I don’t drink tap water?” If you shower, wash your hands, brush your teeth, prepare your food or get filtered drinking water from your fridge, you’re still exposed to these toxins.
Before I sat down to write this post, I took a shower and my eyes were burning like crazy. They continued to burn for about 5 minutes after I got out. I realized I have always gotten burning, itchy eyes after showering, and it finally clicked. It was my water source, all along! I literally felt like I had just gotten out of a chlorinated pool.
Just imagine what it’s doing to our internal organs when we drink it! Making this connection really concerns me considering how much I rely on this water every day to survive.
Unfortunately, a whole-home filtration system can range from $500-2500 depending on the brand. If you’re like me, chances are you don’t have this kind of cash just laying around. I would definitely consider adding this in to your long term savings budget if you are, or plan to be, a homeowner like myself one day!
If it’s not an option right now, you can usually find a reverse osmosis water filtration system at your local health-food store. This is our go-to when we need clean water to drink or bathe with. Also, we are lucky to have watered delivered in 5-gallon glass containers from Mountain Valley Spring Water.
Also, Brita makes a carbon filtered water pitcher for under $30 that makes your water smell and taste better. However it doesn’t remove all chemicals. On their website, Brita claims their water filters remove toxins such as copper, cadmium, mercury and zinc. I’ve used one for many years around the house as well as when traveling and I really can tell a difference in the taste of my water! However, there is an entire market for different water filters that do different things depending on what you’re looking to achieve.
I strongly urge you to not just take my word for it but, instead, do your own research, read ingredient labels and become more aware of what you’re using on a day to day basis.
Chances are you’ll want to ditch these harmful products and find alternatives that are safer for your body (and the environment!)
