For years I heard people going on and on about “bulletproof coffee” and reasons why they were OBSESSED with it. I had no clue what they were talking about. I thought, “Is bulletproof coffee a brand? Is it a type of coffee? Is it a recipe? What in the world are you talking about?” Until finally, my boyfriend whom I had just met, gave me the inside scoop. Then, one day, he made it for me and I instantly fell in love…
It’s creamy texture and bold flavor was everything I’d been looking for in my morning cup of joe. Now I make sure to have it several times a week (if not every day) because of it’s powerful health and satiety benefits.
In this post, I’ll be covering everything you need to know about what Bulletproof Coffee is and why you should be drinking it!
WHAT IS BULLETPROOF COFFEE?
Long story short, bulletproof coffee is technically two different things. It’s a type of caffeinated beverage AND and brand. Bulletproof, the company, was founded by Dave Asprey (@daveasprey) who created the well known drink known as “bulletproof coffee.” After years of research and experience, his creation proved to have incredible benefits on the brain and body that he designed his own company around it.
Essentially, this style of beverage is comprised of 2 main ingredients: brewed coffee and fat. The traditional recipe uses Bulletproof brand coffee, grass-fed butter or ghee and MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil – but you can make sooo many different varieties of it. Instead of butter, you can use coconut oil as a plant-based alternative. I personally enjoy the taste and benefits of grass-fed butter or ghee. Many people, including myself like to add grass-fed collagen protein powder to it for added benefits such as muscle repair and skin health.
If you like your coffee sweet, Bulletproof sells a product called MitoSweet that is a fantastic alternative to many sweeteners on the market since it satisfies that stubborn sweet tooth without compromising glucose levels. Additionally, one of my personal favorites is xylitol, which is a sugar alcohol, usually made from the fibrous parts of plants like corn.
7 BENEFITS OF BULLETPROOF COFFEE:
KEEPS YOU FULL
Whether you’re intermittent fasting, trying to lose weight or just want to save time and energy, bulletproof coffee may help you reach you goals. Whether you use butter, ghee, coconut oil or MCT oil, the high quality fat in this drink will keep you fuller longer because it kick starts your body into ketosis, which essentially has you using slow-burning fat as your energy source.
Since bulletproof coffee contains little to no carbohydrates, hunger signals are decreased and you can rest assured knowing that you got an adequate amount of GOOD calories. I personally look at bulletproof coffee as a meal and, most of the time, I’m so satisfied that I hardly realize it’s lunch time.
INCREASES & SUSTAINS ENERGY
Like I mentioned above, since your body is mostly burning fat for fuel, energy levels are more steady and long lasting opposed to burning primarily carbs, which causes our blood sugar spike, resulting in a short-lived burst of energy. Fat facilitates better absorption of nutrients, therefore, the caffeine in coffee is better absorbed, ultimately giving you more bang for you buck.
MCT oil is faster-absorbing than regular coconut oil, which is a LCT (long chain triglyceride). This means that, even though it burns slower than carbs, it’s digested faster and prevents feelings of heaviness that are commonly felt after consuming traditional fats/oils.
BOOSTS BRAIN & BODY POWER
Coffee is loaded with polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants prevent aging, mutation and deterioration of our cells. When our cells are healthy and functioning, so are our bodies. Additionally, since our brain is made up of around 60% fat, bulletproof coffee is a clean source of saturated fatty acids that optimize our brain function, resulting in improved memory, reduced brain fog and increased nerve function.
PROMOTES CLEAR AND GLOWING SKIN
If you’ve ever experienced acne, you might know that it’s a side effect of a deeper, root cause. For example, Candida (a common fungal infection) can often result in blemished and rough skin. Not only do the antioxidants in coffee give your body a boost in healing, but the MCT oil is especially beneficial in targeting and killing fungus and bacteria. Also, if you choose to add collagen to your BP, the benefits only multiply. Collagen is an essential amino acid that our body uses to make cells in our body, specifically skin, hair, nails and joints.
When I started seeing huge improvements in my skin, I had been drinking bulletproof coffee everyday for a month of two and I looked like a completely different person. Now, granted my diet also consisted of organic, whole foods, but the BP coffee definitely gave my skin an extra boost.
The gut is everything. From my experience, I firmly believe that what we put into our bodies has the greatest effect on our overall health. Since the MCT oil is helping to kill off any foreign invaders in our body, the good bacteria in gut microbiome becomes stronger and digestion is improved. This increases our metabolism (energy conversion), which may reduce symptoms like gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, IBS and even Crohn’s disease.
If you decide to add collagen, you’ll benefit even more because our gut lining is composed mostly of collagen and when we supplement with it, we help to repair any damage which may have resulted in leaky gut. Improving our gut and digestive health is the first step in healing other issues in our bodies.
BALANCES HORMONES & FERTILITY
MCT oil is a a saturated fatty acid that increases the good cholesterol (HDL) in our body which is necessary in the production of many hormones, specifically sex/reproductive hormones like testosterone, estrogen and serotonin. Balancing your hormones is essential in keeping us happy and energized. Not only that, but hormones contribute to every process that occurs in the body. Therefore when we keep our hormones healthy, we keep our body healthy resulting in, potentially, a healthy pregnancy.
Additionally, studies have found that women who consume higher amounts of healthy fats tend to have higher fertility rates. It totally makes sense given that babies have a higher body fat percentage than children and adults. Breast milk has a higher fat ratio compared to cow and plant-based milk so women in their child-bearing years (pregnant or not) would greatly benefit from drinking BP coffee.
REDUCES INFLAMMATION & CHRONIC DISEASE
Lastly, due to the antioxidants in coffee and the compounds in MCT oil and GRASS-FED butter you’ll see a reduction inflammatory markers in the body which will lower your risk of developing chronic diseases where inflammation is prevalent like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Inflammation is also common in those who suffer with neuro-degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Personally, I want to do everything I can to avoid developing any life-threatening diseases and bulletproof coffee is a tasty and affordable way to ensure that. It it not THE answer but it does help.
HOW TO MAKE BULLETPROOF COFFEE
I was pleasantly surprised at how easy making this super yummy beverage actually is. Below is a recipe for 1 serving of BP coffee but I personally make a double serving without regrets or guilt. For the most part… the more the merrier! Just make sure to start small because you may be shocked at how much energy you actually have after drinking it.
1. Add 2-3 tablespoons (tbsp) of ground coffee to your french press (my personal fave brew method) and saturate with 8 oz boiling water
OR make a cup of coffee however you like. Yes, Keurig-brewed coffee is acceptable.
2. Add 1-2 tbsp of grass- fed butter OR 1 tbsp of grass-fed ghee to blender.
3. Add 1 teaspoon – 2 tbsp of MCT oil (I use and love Brain Octane oil) to blender.
4. Add coffee and blend for 15-30 seconds.
Optional: Add 1-2 tbsp of collagen protein powder and blend for an additional 30 seconds.
